First, Lurana Shelter Society came back and told us how they allocated the $16K they received from us at our last meeting.

They provide critical services and programming intended to reduce the impact of exposure to family violence. Their goal is to decrease the incidence, reoccurrence and intergenerational cycle of domestic violence through education, counseling and support for victims of all ages. Services are aimed at supporting families to make positive changes in their lives and are provided through three programming umbrellas:
Safe, secure shelter, emergency services and advocacy
Innovative Child Care
Adult & Youth Outreach Services

- WECAN Food Basket Society of Alberta
WECAN Food Basket Society of Alberta is entering into our 20th year of operation. Our agency supports food security by reaching approximately 650 households each month in 24 Edmonton communities by providing monthly prepaid food orders to members utilizing volunteer labour and three part time staff positions, with limited funding resources. At WECAN, we value independence, cooperation, honesty and self-reliance of our membership and we see this as a contributing factor to alleviating poverty. WECAN Food Basket has become an essential component to many families’ and individuals’ monthly food budget as we believe that everyone has the right to enough food to meet his or her nutritional needs in order to live a good and healthy life. Our program creates a healthy $25 food order that includes fruits, vegetables and meats, using a prepay system, and accesses wholesale pricing through bulk buying with our partner TGP. We partner with many community service organizations who assist volunteer members run the community depots, sort the orders and deliver the case-lot food to the community location. WECAN welcomes an increase in membership numbers over the past few months compared to last year and the trend will continue as Edmontonians are faced with the difficult economic situation.
Recipient of the Night
The charity that was the chosen recipient of the night by the members on hand was, the WECAN Food Basket Society. During the current economic conditions facing Albertans with the slowdown in the oil sector, more and more people are needing the assistance of the WECAN Food Basket Society. After hearing this story of one family’s issues directly related to the slowdown we know this is not the only story of its type. The $13K + given to WECAN Food Basket Society will make a Big Impact.
